Oeneis magna Graeser, 1888 · TYPE LOCALITY. "Pochrofka" [Pokrovka, upper Amur flow, Russia]. · RANGE. From the Altai Mts. across S. Siberia to the Far East, the Amur region, Mongolia and N. China. · DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. S. Siberia, Transbaikalia, the Amur region - the nominate subspecies (= transbaicalica Kurentzov, 1970; = mongolica Kurentzov, 1970; = kurentzovi Murayama, 1973; = judini Korshunov, 1988); the Altai, the Sayan Mts., Tuva - ssp. dubia Elwes, 1899 (= staudingeri Austaut, 1909); the Far East, the Chukot Peninsula - ssp. magadanica Kurentzov, 1970; Kamchatka - ssp. kamtschatica Kurentzov, 1970; NW. Siberia - ssp. pupavkini Korshunov, 1995. The above subspecies differ mainly in width of the submarginal band and in intensity of its coloration. · HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. Sparse woodlands, more rarely mountain tundras, at 1,000-2,000 m a.s.l. Flight period: May-July. The butterflies rest readily on tree trunks. Host plant (Gorbunov, Korshunov, 1995): Carex. · SIMILAR SPECIES. O. jutta: male androconial area more conspicuous; outer side of UNH band serrate. O. actaeoides: UPS ground colour dark, almost black; UPF and UPH ocelli poorly developed, ochreous-brown bands absent, as a rule.
