LEPIDOPTERA

Neope goschkevitschae kurilensis Matsumura, 1928
    Neope goschkevitschae (Menetries, 1857)

· TYPE LOCALITY. "Japon" [Itsu Peninsula, Honshu, Japan].

· RANGE. China, Japan and the Kuriles.

· DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. China, Japan, the S. Kuriles, Sakhalin.

· TAXONOMIC NOTES. The species name has been slightly misspelt as goschkevitschii ever since its proposal by Menetries (1857). Since the original description states explicitly that the name is derived after the wife of I.A. Goschkevitsch, the gender has to be corrected.

The status of the forms kurilensis Matsumura, 1928, described from Kunashir Island, and solowijofkae Matsumura, 1911, described from Sakhalin Island, is unclear; probably both should be referred to this species.

· HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. Flying in valleys and over low hills in June. Host plants in Japan (Fukuda et al., 1983): Sasa kurilensis, S. veitchii.

· SIMILAR SPECIES. N. niphonica: UNF median band wide and totally darkened.
