Hipparchia fagi (Scopoli, 1763) · TYPE LOCALITY. "Krain" [Kraina, Yugoslavia]. · RANGE. From S. Europe to the Volga region and the N. Caucasus. · DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The Crimea, the Caucasus Major (west) - the nominate subspecies (= crimea Sheljuzhko, 1929); the SE. European part - ssp. tetrica Fruhstorfer, 1907. The records from W. Siberia and W. Kazakhstan (Korshunov, 1985) require confirmation. · HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. Sparse woodlands and mixed forest edges up to 1,300 m a.s.l. Flight period: June-August. Host plants (Nekrutenko, 1990): Holcus lanatus, H. mollis, Brachypodium. · SIMILAR SPECIES. H. alcyone: smaller; UPS pale bands with yellowish tinge. H. syriaca: UPS bands greatly shaded, especially so in males; UNH pattern more strongly contrasting; genitalia different.
