· TYPE LOCALITY. "...in Russia australiori" [S. Russia].

· RANGE. From France across central Europe, the S. European part, Kazakhstan and S. Siberia to the Ussuri region, China, Korea and Japan.

· DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. Represented by the nominate subspecies almost throughout the range, with the exception of the Amur and Ussuri regions where the ssp. magna Heyne, 1895 (= amurensis Heyne, 1895) is known to occur.

· HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. A local moorland and forest-dwelling species found in swampy meadows, flood-lands and river valleys, more rarely in wet grassy plots and clearings in the forest and forest-steppe zones. In the mountains of S. Siberia, it reaches the upper forest line. Flight period: June-August. Larvae hibernating. Host plants in Europe (Eckstein, 1913; Forster, Wohlfahrt, 1955; etc.): Poa, Lolium, Carex, Iris pseudacorus.

· SIMILAR SPECIES. Aphantopus hyperantus: larger, UNH without ocellus in spaces M2-M3.
