· TYPE LOCALITY. Sweden.

· RANGE. From N. France and Scandinavia across Middle and E. Europe and temperate Asia to the Ussuri region, China, Korea and Japan.

· DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. In the northern part of the area (Scandinavia, the Baltic countries, the N. European part), the species is represented by the nominate subspecies; further to the east and to the south (the N. Ukraine, the central and E. European parts, the Urals, W. Siberia up to Irtysh River) by the ssp. sabaeus Fabricius, 1775. The eastern part of the range, up to the Pacific, is occupied by the ssp. perseis Lederer, 1853 (= sibirica Fuchs, 1899); populations from Sakhalin are referred to the ssp. pilwonis Matsumura, 1925, and those from Kunashir Island to the ssp. latefasciata Matsumura, 1925.

· HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. Humid meadows, mostly in sparse larch forests; in the mountains up to the upper forest line (2,000-2,200 m a.s.l.). In western areas, it commonly occurs in upland bogs, in dry pine forests and dry meadows. Flight period: June-July, in the south there seem to be two overlapping generations. Host plants in Europe (Lang, 1884; Henriksen, Kreutzer, 1982; etc.): Elymus, Poa, Hordeum, Calamagrostis.
