• TYPE LOCALITY. Braunschweig [Germany].

• SYNONYMS: silvius Knoch, 1871.

• RANGE. From Middle and NE. Europe across temperate Asia to Mongolia and Japan.

• DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The European part, the Caucasus(?), Siberia and the Far East from the Urals and the Altai to Kamchatka, Sakhalin, the Kuriles and the Ussuri region. Relatively constant in external characters throughout the distribution range.

• HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. Forest edges and clearings, grassy meadows, river valleys. Flight period: May-July in a single generation. Host plants (Eckstein, 1913): various grasses (Bromus, Cynosurus, Milium effusum, etc.). Larvae hibernating in grassy leaves tied together.

• SIMILAR SPECIES. C. palaemon: UPS ground colour darker yellow, FW black spots large and merging (or wings black with yellow spots), UNH with contrasting spots.
