· TYPE LOCALITY. "Sudrussland" [S. Russia].

· RANGE. From the SE. European part and S. Urals across Kazakhstan and N. Tian-Shan to Transbaikalia, Mongolia and N. Tibet; Spain.

· DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The SE. European part - the nominate subspe-cies; N. Tian-Shan, Dzhungarsky Alatau, Saur and Tarbagatai - ssp. mercurius Staudinger, 1887. Specimens from the Sayan Mts. and Transbaikalia perhaps also deserve a subspecific rank.

· HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. Steppe-clad slopes, sometimes with rock, up to 1,500-2,500 m a.s.l. Flight period: July-August. Larvae hibernating.

· SIMILAR SPECIES. P. pallida: smaller; UPS postdiscal bands whitish, pale straw coloured; UNH with a diffuse undulate pattern, veins grey and inconspicuous against ground colour.
