Oeneis jutta (Hubner, [1806])
· TYPE LOCALITY. Lapland.
· RANGE. From Scandinavia across the N. European part and Siberia to the Chukot Peninsula and N. America, up to Mongolia, the Amur region and N. Korea in the south.
· DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. A great range of infrapopulational and geographical variation of the species makes its subspecific division difficult. The bulk of the distribution area is inhabited by the nominate subspecies, to which the ssp. timanica Sedykh, 1977, described from the NE. European part (the Timansky Range), should also be referred. In the Polar Urals and apparently in the zone of larch forest-tundra of Siberia, the small form kryzhanowskii Sedykh, 1977 is known to occur. The form sibirica Kurentzov, 1970 has been described from the northeastern part of the range, viz. the Far East and the Chukot Peninsula, and sachalinensis Matsumura, 1927 from Sakhalin. The southern part of the area, beginning from the S. Urals and further to the east, is populated by the large form gigantea Austaut, 1911.
· HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. Sparse woodlands on moors. Flight period: May-July. Host plants (Henriksen, Kreutzer, 1982): Eriophorum, Carex, Sciprus caespitosa, Molinia caerulea, Glyceria, Juncus. Larvae hibernating twice.
· SIMILAR SPECIES. O. fulla, O. actaeoides: UPS ground colour dark, almost black; UPF and UPH ocelli poorly developed, ochreous-brown bands absent, as a rule. O. magna: male androconial area inconspicuous; UNH outer side of band more or less even.
