Erebia magdalena Strecker, 1880
    Erebia magdalena Strecker, 1880

· TYPE LOCALITY. "Colorado" [Colorado ?Plateau, USA].

· RANGE. From the Sayan Mts. across the Far East and the Chukot Peninsula to Alaska and the Rocky Mountains.

· DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. A high-altitude species with a disjunct but wide distribution pattern; very rare in collections. In our opinion, the following taxa can be referred to this species: ssp. sachaensis Dubatolov, 1992 - the Far East and the Chukot Peninsula; ssp. ola Korshunov, 1995 - the Magadan Region; ssp. erynnyn Warren, 1932 (= sajanensis Korshunov, 1970) - the Sayan Mts. and the Baikal area.

· TAXONOMIC NOTES. Korshunov & Gorbunov (1995) refer these taxa to E. mackinleyensis Gunder, 1932, the latter previously treated as a subspecies of E. magdalena.

· HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. All the very few known specimens of this species have been found on stony screes at 1,500-2,600 m a.s.l. in June-July depending on the latitude. Host plant in Alaska (Scott, 1986): Carex atrata.

· SIMILAR SPECIES. E. fasciata: UNH postdiscal band sharp and contrasting with ground colour.
