· TYPE LOCALITY. "Suddeutschland?" [S. Germany].
· RANGE. The whole of Europe (except for the British Isles and the extreme north), central and S. Siberia to Japan.
· DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. In the area concerned, the following subspecies have been encountered:
ssp. glycerion (Borkhausen, 1788) (= iphis Dennis et Schiffermuller, 1775, nom. praeoccup.; = tiphon Esper, 1779, nom. praeoccup.) - the European part, W. Siberia;
ssp. alta Sheljuzhko, 1937 - the Caucasus Major and Minor;
ssp. korshunovi Nekrutenko, 1978 - the Crimea;
ssp. iphicles Staudinger, 1892 (= heroides Christoph, 1893) - the N. Altai, the Sayan Mts., Transbaikalia, the Amur and Ussuri regions;
ssp. iphina Staudinger, 1892 - Saur and Tarbagatai.
· TAXONOMIC NOTES. The infraspecific systematics of this species is still poorly studied, so descriptions of new subspecies are quite probable.
· HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. Various forest and forest-steppe habitats on plains and in the mountains up to 2,000 m a.s.l.; in the Amur and Ussuri regions, the species is associated with larch moorlands. Flight period: June-August. Larvae hibernating. Host plants in Europe (Eckstein, 1913; Nekrutenko, 1990; Gorbunov, Korshunov, 1995): Briza, Poa, Brachypodium, Melica, Cynosurus and other grasses.
