• TYPE LOCALITY. Sarepta [now the suburbs of Volgograd, lower Volga region].
• SYNONYMS: cynarae Boisduval, 1840.
• RANGE. S. Europe from Spain to the S. Urals, also the Caucasus and Asia Minor.
• DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The S. European part to the Crimea and the S. Urals, Transcaucasia. Variation little.
• HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. Dry steppe habitats, stony slopes up to 2,000 m a.s.l. Flight period: July-August in a single generation.
• SIMILAR SPECIES. P. alveus, P. armoricanus: smaller, UPF white spots small and separate, UNH ground colour darker and without yellow tinge; genitalia different.
