· TYPE LOCALITY. "Dasht-i-Riwat, lower Panjshir Valley, 2200 m" [Hindu Kush, Afghanistan].

· RANGE. From Kopet-Dagh to Hindu Kush and Alai.

· DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. Kopet-Dagh - ssp. kopetdaghi Dubatolov, 1989; Alai, the Pamirs - ssp. badachshana Wyatt et Omoto, 1966. Perhaps populations from Ghissar also deserve a subspecific rank.

· HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. Dry stony slopes at 1,500-3,500 m a.s.l. Flight period: July-August.

· SIMILAR SPECIES. P. turkestana: fringes brownish-grey; UPF apical eye-spot smaller than the anal one; androconial scales different in shape. P. pakistana: fringes darker; UPF with a single apical eye-spot, as a rule; UPS postdiscal band contrasting and bicoloured. P. pelopea: fringes brownish-grey; UPF postdiscal band broadly interrupted between eye-spots, with two bright white dots present in this space. P. beroe aurantiaca: fringes brownish-grey; UPF band broadly interrupted between eye-spots; UNH uniform brownish-grey; wings produced.
