· TYPE LOCALITY. "Karnten" [S. Austria].

· RANGE. Middle Europe to S. Scandinavia and eastwards across northern Central Asia to Korea and Japan.

· DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The European part, the Caucasus Major, Siberia, Transbaikalia, the Far East, Kamchatka - the nominate form; the Amur and Ussuri regions - ssp. achinoides Butler, 1878 (= eximia Staudinger, 1892; = pusilla Kurentzov, 1966). In addition, the following subspecies have been described: ssp. chosensis Matsumura, 1929 (Furughelm Island near Vladivostok); ssp. karafutonis Matsumura, 1928 (Sakhalin); ssp. kurilensis Matsumura, 1928 (the S. Kuriles).

· HABITAT AND BIOLOGY. The species is very characteristic of the forest zone up to 1,000-1,500 m a.s.l., preferring shadowy humid places. The adults often fly under the forest canopy, resting on leaves. Flight period: June-August. Larvae feed on various grasses (Lolium, Poa, Agropyron, Dactylis, Melica, etc.), also on Carex spp. (Lang, 1884). Hibernation larval.
