• TYPE LOCALITY. "Europa".

• SYNONYMS: morio Scopoli, 1763; geryon Rottemburg, [1775].

• RANGE. From W. Europe across Asia Minor and Central Asia to the Amur region.

• DISTRIBUTION AND VARIATION. The central and S. European parts, the Caucasus, W. and S. Siberia to the Amur region. Showing relatively minor variation; the ssp. unicolor Freyer, 1852 has been recorded in Transcaucasia.

• HABITATS AND BIOLOGY. Open grassy habitats up to 2,000 m a.s.l. Flight periods: May-June and July-August in two generations. In the northern regions and at the highest altitudes, there is only a single generation. Host plants in Europe: Eryngium, Lotus, Coronilla, Medicago, Hippocrepis, etc. (Henriksen, Kreutzer, 1982).

• SIMILAR SPECIES. E. popoviana: FW pointed, UPS pattern more strongly contrasting, HW discal and postdiscal white spots bright and sharply defined on both sides. E. marloyi: male without costal fold, FW with marked dark bands, UNS without white marginal points.
